18TH C. SRI LANKAN BUDDHA

This is the first Sri Lankan buddha that I have had to sell.  Most ones you see are reproductions. Real ones are very rare, and generally very expensive when you see one.  This unusual form is actually classic for the Sri Lankan style.  Theravada, the form of Buddhism that is overwhelmingly practiced in Southeast Asia originated in Sri Lanka after being transported there from India in about the third century B.C.E.  It then spread to other countries, with Burma being the most devout.  This nice example stands 14 inches high, with a green patina with copper and cuprite deposits.  It is very heavily cast.  No buddha collection should be without one from this important historical country.  $2400
