EXCEPTIONAL TAIHU SCHOLAR'S ROCK

Scholar's rocks are used as decoration, and as a focus of contemplation.  This type of rock come from Lake Tai, west of Shanghai, where it is formed by eons of erosion of the limestone by underwater currents.  This is one of the best examples that I have seen, with its delicate bridges and tunnels and lovely ivory color.  It stands 28" high with the base.  This is one of the pieces we have that looks far better in person.  I see in the upcoming Sotheby's auction that stones of this size and quality are estimated (which is usually a minimum price) at $6000-$8000.
