20TH C. THAI SUKTHOTHAI RECLINING BUDDHA

This buddha after testing has been shown to be of 20th century origin.  The price has accordingly been reduced tremendously.  Reclining buddhas represent the buddha sleeping if the feet are even, and the death of the buddha and his ascension to Nirvana if the feet are not in alignment.  He is very large, with the base spanning 27 1/2 inches, and 9 1/2inches in height.  There is a beautiful complex red patina, and a Pali temple inscription on the base.  He has a kind, warm face, and the form and detailing are superb.  Although this is not as old as I thought, it still is a large and beautiful piece.  $1600
