13TH C. JAVANESE BUDDHA This beautiful small buddha is the oldest one on the website. He dates to the 13th century Majapahit Empire, before Java became a Muslim country. Javanese bronze casting was incredibly advanced, and the pieces have detail that is unmatched by any other culture, even the Chinese. Unfortunately, unlike other countries that still have very advanced casting techniques, the art has been lost in Indonesia. Pieces are rare, and very expensive when found. They often are very deteriorated due to bronze disease. This buddha has is completely intact, with a deep green patina with traces of cuprite and azurite. He stands 8.5 inches high, with extraordinary detail. I have only come across a couple of Javanese buddhas, and this is a fine example. Any collector would be proud to own one. $2100
