19TH C. JAPANESE  STONE KUKAI

This is the first of a number of stones I will be offering for sale.  They are all antique, and are authentic, with weathering and lichen accumulation from longtime exposure, giving them a wonderful patina.  They can be used indoors or outdoors, and bring serenity into the space where they are placed.  They look wonderful when illuminated from an angle, so that the detail shows beautifully.  Most are granite, and consequently very heavy.  Please take this into account in terms of shipping cost.

Seated stone depiction of Kukai (774-835), known posthumously as Kobo Daishi. With the exception of a hairline crack running vertically from the forehead to the nose, the condition is flawless.  Height 31.2 cm, Width 19.6 cm, Depth 12.5 cm.  Kobo Daishi is the founder of the Japanese Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism and the creator of the kana syllabary still used today in written Japanese. A rare, and beautifully executed, depiction in stone of one of Japan's most revered cultural heroes.  $1400.
