18th C. BURMESE LACQUER AND GLASS JAMBUPATI BUDDHA Very large (28 ½ “, 71 cm) dry lacquer and mercury glass crowned Jambupati Buddha. As the legend goes, the haughty King Jambupati was about to conquer his neighboring kingdom, when the Buddha appeared to him, dressed in such splendor that the king was humbled, and forsook his evil ways to follow the Buddha. Whatever. These are about my favorite kind of image; note the several others and the front page. There are several hairline cracks, and the base was previously repaired; nothing that spoils the appearance. A wonderful image. You simply cannot find these old images with authentic glass any more. |
